Family Name: Rhamnaceae Common Names: New Jersey Tea, Jersey tea, mountain-sweet, red root, Walpole tea, wild snowball, bobea, Red Indian Paint, Tetterwort... Some Common Uses: astringent, expectorant, haemostatic, hypotensive, and sedative. The roots and root bark of the red roots was used by the North American Indians to treat fevers and problems with the mucous membranes, such as sore throats. An external use of the bark is to do a skin wash for cancer and venereal sores. The powdered bark has been used to dust the sores.
